Reduce pesticide and herbicide losses with IITA's herbicide calculator
The "IITA Herbicides Calculator" is a solution designed to address the prevalent issue of pesticide misuse resulting from inadequate calibration of spray tanks. It permits farmers to estimate the required quantity of herbicides for knapsack sprayers. This tool was developed using Java language, the Ionic framework, and Android Studio, ensuring its robustness and usability. Tested for effectiveness and reliability by researchers, this technology assists in calibrating the application of herbicides and other pesticides specifically for knapsack sprayers. It's important to note that the tool does not involve specific compositions or sequences of products or technologies.
This technology is TAAT1 validated.
Adults 18 and over: Positive high
The poor: Positive medium
Under 18: Positive low
Women: Positive medium
Climate adaptability: Highly adaptable
Farmer climate change readiness: Significant improvement
Biodiversity: No impact on biodiversity
Carbon footprint: Same amount of carbon released
Soil quality: Does not affect soil health and fertility
Water use: Same amount of water used
This technology aims to enhance food security, promote environmental protection, and ensure the safety of pesticide applicators. Simultaneously, it contributes to efficient and sustainable management of plant pests and diseases while mitigating the impacts of climate change.
To integrate this technology into your project, create a list of activities and prerequisites, including:
Raising awareness among farmers about the benefits and availability of the IITA Herbicide calculator.
Establishing training of trainers and collective action programs.
Linking producers to financial support and markets.
- Estimate the number of IITA Herbicide calculator subscriptions needed for your project, considering that the product costs 30,000 USD.
- As the technology is a digital tool, include the cost of android phones and data. Training is crucial, and a team of trainers could provide support throughout the project, including post-training. Develop communication support for the technology, such as flyers, videos, and radio broadcasts.
To implement the technology in your country, consider collaborating with agricultural development institutes, agro-chemical companies and spray service providers.

Scaling Readiness describes how complete a technology’s development is and its ability to be scaled. It produces a score that measures a technology’s readiness along two axes: the level of maturity of the idea itself, and the level to which the technology has been used so far.
Each axis goes from 0 to 9 where 9 is the “ready-to-scale” status. For each technology profile in the e-catalogs we have documented the scaling readiness status from evidence given by the technology providers. The e-catalogs only showcase technologies for which the scaling readiness score is at least 8 for maturity of the idea and 7 for the level of use.
The graph below represents visually the scaling readiness status for this technology, you can see the label of each level by hovering your mouse cursor on the number.
