ProvisionGard™ is an insect growth regulator (IGR) treatment incorporated into food packaging to protect packaged dry foods from stored-product insect infestation throughout the commercial supply chain. The treatment can be added to the food-grade adhesive or applied during printing or converting of paper and flexible packaging. It acts from the outside of the package and does not come into direct contact with the food. ProvisionGard™ can be integrated into existing packaging manufacturing processes, while millers and food processors can use the treated packaging on their existing filling lines without major process changes. It provides protection during warehousing, distribution, retail and household storage, without requiring cold-chain infrastructure or re-treatment after packaging. According to the provider, the treatment costs approximately KES 0.45 per packet, equivalent to approximately USD 3.50 per 1,000 packets treated, offering a potentially low-cost approach to reducing infestation-related product losses, returns and rejected stock.

By reducing the disposal of food already produced, processed, packaged, and distributed, ProvisionGard™ helps reduce waste of resources embedded in food production and supply chains.
Reducing avoidable food loss also helps avoid wasting the land, water, inputs, and other resources already used to produce food that would otherwise need to be replaced.
The packaging printer or converter incorporates ProvisionGard™ into the packaging during normal printing or production. The treatment is applied to the outer layer of the package and does not come into direct contact with the food.
The treatment is added according to the adhesive system used. The Product Data Sheet recommends 1% of the solids portion for solvent-based applications and 0.5% of the total batch mix for solventless applications.
The miller or food processor uses the treated packaging on its existing filling line. No major changes to the filling process are required.
The packaged food moves through normal transport, warehousing, and retail operations. No cold chain or additional re-treatment is required.
The consumer stores the packaged food normally, while the treated packaging continues to protect the product throughout its shelf life.
