Sahel Potato Innovation Package: High-Performing Potato Varieties and Quality Seed Potato Production System for West Africa

High-quality, disease-free seed potatoes for African farmers The Sahel Potato Innovation Package is a commercial potato production solution combining three high-performing varieties—Chieftain, AC Chaleur, and Kennebec—with the supply of Elite III disease-free seed potatoes and improved production and storage practices. The technology provides agribusinesses with a diversified portfolio to serve fresh potato, storage, and industrial processing markets. Chieftain offers high yield potential (up to 37 t/ha), AC Chaleur provides excellent storage performance with reduced post-harvest losses, and Kennebec targets processing markets due to its high total solids content. By addressing the shortage of quality planting material and improving production efficiency, the technology creates investment opportunities across seed multiplication, commercial production, storage, and potato value chain development in West Africa.
